STAGE 1
As my research into costume resulted in me having to design and make my own Thor costume, my first piece of concept art just gave 20 rough, basic ideas. Some of these I dislike, but am glad I drew them so I can gain a more definitive idea of what I do like as a costume.
I strongly disliked designs 17 and and 5 for their plainness, and number 11 as I think it looks too gladiatorial and not particularly like Thor. Number 10 was a more risky look too, where the costume is very classic superhero, combining the circles into what would be planets showing his cosmic world.
My favorite designs are numbers 1, 4, 7, 9, 12, and 15, and these I think I will develop these six different ideas into more detailed designs.
STAGE 2
All these designs will include a belt and gloves, (in Norse Mythology these he wore to hold and carry his hammer.) I also wish to include the discs on the torso, muscular arms and the cape as I have found (and as Alexadra Byrne stated) these are symbolic and iconic to Thor.
1.
Here is design 1 developed. This idea was to take Ultimate Thor and add the normal hammer and a cape, which in my opinion he should have had throughout the series. However, I think that this is too similar to other designs and a bit too simple for the look I want to create. I do however love Ultimate Thor's facial heir design, and would include this in developed designs.
4.
Number 4 was an attempt at Thor's more Nordic routes, with exaggerated features. His beard is longer, and armor long and sharp, looking rather impossible and more for fashion than function. I liked the idea of the ripped up cape that looks more battle damaged, but ultimately I felt this design in my eyes looked more like King Thor, or Odin than the look I was hoping to capture.
7.
This was a look more based off his appearance in Thor: The Dark World and Ages of Thunder. This is a design I like that captures every iconic look of Thor though it is very similar to various other appearances. I especially like the pointed shoulder pads that make him look broader and more like royalty, while still looking combat ready and somewhat other-worldly.
9.
Design 9 was a look closer to Ages of Thunder and again a more viking look. This however was much less armored than before and I also added the helmet in a cross between the comic look and a more traditional viking helmet. I also added this fur texture to his gloves and boots, and also on the rim of the cape for a more royal look, and thought in cold realms like Jotunheim and in cold countries like Norway it would add function.
12.
This look used a sleeveless coat rather than cape, in hope to realize the costume even in a mythical world. This look was intentionally made to fit into a more 'Lord of the Rings' type world, hence the difference in the skirt type area. He also has armor but not ludicrous amounts, and all in all I think displays a good look for a new take on Thor.
15.
Finally this is my last of this stage. I drew this while watching Iron Man 3, which is perhaps my it looks so technologically powered. It took much inspiration fro the Thor: reborn costume and the movie Thor costume. I also made the Torso, gauntlets and boots look similar to the interior of the Bi-frost seen in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. I did this to add a sense of science, an the idea from the quote "Your ancestors called it magic and you call it science. Well, I come from a place where they're one and the same thing."- Thor 2011, as I wanted to to capture a look that combined these elements.
In conclusion I have decided to develop designs 7, 8, and 12 as I feel these are my favorites and again equally different from each other, which I think would be nice to see contrast keep my options open.
STAGE 3
Design 7.
Here I have developed design 7 into a comic book illustration with colour. I am very proud of this design and although I will keep exploring the other ideas, feel strongly that this could be my final costume.
My only criticism would be that it has no blue in the colour scheme, but after visual lightening effects I am confident plenty of blue will in the film. To ensure this, I drew out a quick background to demonstrate how the lightening may effect the colours.
Design 12.
Developed design 12 used more blue in the costume, and while used the iconic elements and classic colours of Thor, though I like the design I don't feel it right, as is looks too far from what people will recognize as Thor.
I'm glad I attempted this idea, but unfortunately won't be developing it further. I don't think it has as an imposing presence as Thor should and and it doesn't capture the look I'm looking for, I much prefer design 7.
This said, I am proud of the drawing and costume, and it does have many beneficial factors for other uses, (such as comic) just not my film. I also must remember that it doesn't exist in the same universe as the Loki costume I already have in possession.
Design 9.
Design 9 I am immensely proud of, even though it neither fits the Loki costume I have already purchased and couldn't appear in my film, I like the style and it would be very easy to make. I think it looks like Marvel's Thor, and yet is different and original enough resembling only the Ages of thunder costume. I also added goat horns onto his belt as Norse mythology stated he rode a cart through the sky lead by his two giant goats and when hungry, ate them and resurrected them with his hammer. I thought it was a subtle detail that was a nice feature.
I also like that his posture is slightly slanted, as it provides a tougher look. I think his anatomy is good and I like how the veins in his arms are visible, and though he is overly and exaggeratedly muscular I like this appearance for Thor.
STAGE 4
Here I decided to draw out my actor in Loki costume so when designing my
final Thor piece, it would be easy to compare how it might look. I
used the style of design 9 as it looks more realistic and gives me a
better indication of how these will look in real life. Though I would wish there to be more green in the costume, in visual effects (teleportation) I am sure more will be present. I am proud of this design for Loki and if this is how he look in my film I think that I couldn't have done it better myself.
After looking at some materials I will be using (seen in my next post) I designed what I hope my Thor costume will look like. If I can make my costume look anything like my design, I will be very happy with myself. This design matches the Loki costume (in my opinion) perfectly, and would look fantastic on film. It combines the Ultimate Thor facial hair, Movie Thor's shoulder pads, the often seen skirt piece, all the iconic elements of Thor and Movie hammer. I also like how the red underneath the gauntlets and below the knees correspond and match the cape, and has enough black in the costume to match Loki, while he still looks more villainous.
Finally I added a background based on the Svartalfeheim (Elven dark world) seen in Thor: The Dark World. The best part of Thor: the Dark world took place here and Thor 2 for me proved to be his best solo adventure in any media. The background consisted of some ideas that I had in my head for where I would film, but I will investigate locations at a later date.
In conclusion I feel my concept art (though rough at first) has lead me to a brilliant final outcome I am very proud off, although I am unsure weather Loki's green blur looks enough like a mid-teleport.
