Context of Practice Lecture 11: Critical Anaylisis

Free Dictionary.com describes Critical Analysis as "An appraisal  based on a careful analytic evaluation" and Ask.com defines it as "Critical analysis is a central process involved in all academic work. It involves hard (critical) thinking which is applying rational and logical thinking while deconstructing the different texts that a person reads."
I came up with the idea with the photographer. We took the pictures on May 15, and we were done with it by the beginning of June. Any similarities are totally coincidental, and it was originally supposed to be more of a metaphor for destroying capitalism — where the music is making capitalist towers blow up. The politics of the Coup have more to do with the people organizing each other.

A point our lecturer made which I thought was good, (but did already know) was if you find an argument against your own when writing an essay, don't disregard it, use it to your advantage by either disproving it or using examples to show why your solution is better. Blooms Taxonomy shows a fantastic diagram to help when writing essays, which I think will prove very useful in the future. This is because it lays out the stages of a good essay, roughly describes each stage and uses colour to break up the sections.
We also looked at the differences between descriptive writing, and Critical, analytical writing. For example, descriptive could be to state what happened, and a critical piece of writing would identify its significance.

Also descriptive writing would sate what something is like, and a critical piece would evaluate strengths and weakness', and finally a descriptive piece of writing might say when something happened, and a critical piece of writing would describe why the timing is important. For example The Coup's original album cover for 'Party Music' shows the twin towers exploding, set for release November 6th 2001 .

At first glance this seems very distasteful and arrogant. But the timing of this would prove it was designed before 9/11, and the album cover was immediately halted. 'Boots' Riley (the man with the 'detonator') stated "I came up with the idea with the photographer. We took the pictures on May 15, and we were done with it by the beginning of June. Any similarities are totally coincidental, and it was originally supposed to be more of a metaphor ... destroying capitalism — where the music is making capitalist towers blow up." - http://www.snopes.com/rumors/thecoup.asp

This would forgive most upset at the artists for the image, and although it was created before 9/11 the image still seems far worse and less comedic (judging its ment to somehow have an element of comedy by and the smirk on Rielly's face) knowing 9/11 did happen. This is why timing of the text and or image is vital.
