Game Art and Machinima Environment Research: Australia

By Meg Sugden
As we knew that we wanted to set our game level in Australia, I started off by doing a bit of research into the country and also creating a mood board to get an idea of all of the different locations. As Australia is such a big and beautiful country I wanted to get a good idea of each of the different places that could be a possible location for our film.

The mood board above it definitely a great starting point and gives a lot of inspiration for were our film can be set, but I also wanted to look at traditional Australia Aborigines and tribes to see how different they were and how they lived and survived.

It's quite clear that they lived in big groups in a tribe and worked together to be able to create homes for themselves. What we hope to produce is something similar to this, and this kind of environment. We want to take a traditional village type area and put an animal twist on it so that it would be a group of duck-billed platypus' living there instead. We want to use this idea of having huts and putting them in a big group. Below is an image of a village that I found that I think gives off the vibe of a village that I could see our character living it. We like the idea that it is located next the water, as platypus' love to swim and then we live that there is a village type settlement area next to it. Altogether the images below and above will all help towards creating an interesting environment that suits the character perfectly.
