BAF: Warren Specter

Warren Specter has worked on big games such as Dues Ex and Epic Mickey, though his talk mostly focused on Epic Mickey. Warren Specter has clearly always been a huge fan off cartoons such as Looney Tunes and Disney all his life, and successfully made a career in his hobbies. He briefly spoke of the influence of cartoons on games, such as the Simpsons, and vise-versa, such as Sonic and Mario and the inevitability of trans-media.

He also spoke of how audio is essential in cartoons and games, because they lack realism and can't tell a story through pictures as easily a film can. He also mentioned how Art Davis is the unsung king of Looney Toones showing his devotion and constant research into the theme.

The concept art teams had an extremely long process to 'get Mickey right.' They started with completely re shaping his look, but after lots of negative feedback they reverted to classic Mickey Mouse. They also made a quick 15 words to sum up the character, which I found fantastic to hear as I did this in my VFX project for Thor and Loki naturally. They then rounded body and head and thing arms and legs, however the arms and legs didn't show up when shrunk on screen and they had to re-think the design. they slimmed him up and thickened his arms and legs and felt they had done a great job. I however felt this was not brilliant as I don't think he looks great in this game. I would have much preferred to see the rounder original incarnation. They also gave him a paint brush so he had a tool to fight with, coming up with the idea of a paint brush so he could paint in and erase characters, props, and locations. He also talked of how Mickeys ears don't work in a fixed 3-Dimensional world, as when he turns from front to left or right they stay the same distance apart. In the mechanics of the Mesh, skeleton and bones, he explained how they took much inspiration from the cartoons like fantasia and actually animated their model to exactly duplicate some movements to get his movements right. This heavy research and design I found admirable although I didn't like the final outcome.

He also expressed his desire to start making musical games. In Epic Mickey he involved a song which he showed and I found very good, well written and catchy just like a Disney song should be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdcmJQsy784
