The only problem I have with the Skyrim paper map is how empty it feels in comparison to the in-game map. Skyrim is a highly detailed world, and as the whole place is explorable and they have placed all these places on a 3D in-game map it seems strange they left their 2D map so bare.
The actual game of Skyrim is very well thought out and intricately designed to a stage even I am yet to fully explore every corner and tomb of it, with some of the landscapes and stronghold designs being very inspirational indeed, particularly I felt Windhelm, for its menacing architecture (pictured below). I would conclude that inspiration from Skyrim would be taken from in-game experience and not the paper map sold with the game.
