Researching the North: How To Train Your Dragon films

Something that these films did extremely well was the scale. As a camera man said in one of the Planet Earth dairies when in this landscape for weeks was that it makes you feel so small and so insignificant. Buddhist people would often meditate on top of mountains in the Himalayas to reach enlightenment, and viewing something so beautiful is said to help put into perspective that you are part of a world much larger and bigger than yourself. Everything looks huge in How To Train Your Dragon, which is something I want to capture as the North I will design is not only the home to many Vikings but also a land previously for giants. By making the world look overwhelmingly big, it not only looks overpowering to the heroes but also adds a sense of impossibility to overcome.
